I made the mistake of thinking that I had to install the disc that comes with the unit.there is NO need to do anything with this disc, you just simply have to put in a DVD, and it will play.I am able to use the controls of my computer to operate the DVD Player.It's as if my internal player never had a problem.An excellent machine that does exactly what you want. If you own an iMac or macbook that had an original cd/dvd, then you took the original cd/dvd out to upgrade the hard drive like I did, you will find the hard way that Apple crippled the Apple Superdrive so as not to work on such upgraded machines. I made the mistake of thinking the Apple superdrive would work on my upgraded iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011). So I returned it and bought this LG burner.

It's something like $ less than the superdrive and oh by the way, IT WORKS. Now, if you have an iMac or macbook that did NOT come with a dvd/cd built in, the Apple SuperDrive WILL work on your computer.

But heck, I'm hear to tell you, why spend the extra $ bucks? Just get this.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Chewbacca the Earthling from Flunked I bought this months ago as a spare just in case my full size LG writer fails after about a year of use(I don't expect them to last more than a year and a half). Well, my full-sized LG died, could not be recognized by ROXIO burning software and my ripping app. I opened this brand new writer and signs of trouble immediately appeared, it would not rip properly then when I burn DVDs, I am getting buffering problems, something I have not seen for a while and did not expect from modern writers. Sure enough, just about every disc I tried to burn, Sonys, HP, Verbatim, Taiyo Yudens, the usual reliable stock I have that worked well with my defunct writer, pretty much all failed. The star I gave to is for it's good looks, functionally, it's a dead weight, piece of junk.

Now it could be because I am using Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite even though the specs. Say up to 10.7. But I think the hardware is faulty. I replace it with a Pioneer, bought here.cost about 3x more but it run rings around the LG. This one is not worth running around period!

There were many drives that were $79 or higher, which I thought was overpriced after searching the web for an alternative. Since I have an LG IPS monitor which I love, I decided to buy the LG drive.

I paid $$from B&H which included shipping! The drive works perfectly as expected and I was happy to have saved money with my purchase. Thank you B&H!Frank.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Padre from A Necessary Part of my Computer Gear Call me a dinosaur but in these days of thinner laptops and tablets, I miss the CD/DVD drive. I still use CD's for music and information, and my laptop (among other faults) has no drive. This little beauty solves the problem. Easy to install, small enough to fit in a pocket much less a computer bag or a suitcase, it is a problem solver. I don't use it all the time - but when I do it's there, it works, and I can depend on it.

Price is more than fair, I have received more in value of service than I paid for it many times over.
